Building Houses and Building Hope in Douglas and Jefferson Counties. If you need help with becoming a home owner but do not qualify for a traditional mortgage loan, you may find help from the local Habitat for Humanity organization.

Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority
The Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority provides affordable housing to eligible families and individuals living in Lawrence and Douglas County. ALL housing programs are waiting list based. No emergency housing is available.

Tenants to Homeowners, Inc.
(TTH) is the Lawrence first time homebuyer nonprofit that combines “real estate” and “affordability.” The TTH first time homebuyer program and the Lawrence Community Housing Trust is offered to any Lawrence resident who qualifies for a home loan and earns less than 80% of median income. The Lawrence Community Housing Trust is one of 250 U.S. land trust programs that can sell homes at lower than average prices because the buyer finances the cost of the home - not the lot it sits on - which can often cost as much as $40,000. The housing trust program offers affordability in other ways as well. There is no loan application fee and TTH will cover closing costs up to $3,000. Because TTH believes the cost of utilities contributes to overall housing affordability, they are a certified Energy Star builder. The average housing trust home maintains heating and lighting costs of less than $100/month.

Ballard Community Services
BCS administers the Emergency Services Council (ESC) helping those facing utility disconnection or eviction; “Warm Hearts,” which assists with the heating of homes, and “Heats On,” a program to inspect the furnaces of elderly and disabled homeowners who cannot afford to hire someone else to do the work.

Family Promise of Lawrence
Family Promise of Lawrence is a faith based, non-profit program that transforms the lives of homeless children and their families by providing shelter, food, transportation, training, counseling, medical care, and other assistance in a safe, compassionate homelike environment.

Lawrence Community Shelter
On-site emergency night shelter for 53 families and adults in warm weather, 76 in cold weather, and up to 136 in freezing weather (91 usual maximum), housing applications, referrals and collaborations with local landlords, Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, The Salvation Army, and Topeka Rescue Mission.

USDA Rural Development Guaranteed Housing Loan Program
This loan program is designed to meet the needs of those living in rural areas, small communities, and many outlying metropolitan areas. A USDA loan requires NO DOWN PAYMENT.
